How to Uninstall and Reinstall Java

Step 1: How to Uninstall Java

Always uninstall your current version of Java before re-installing Java.

  1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser

  2. Click: Start and then Control Panel ​​(depending on your Operating System or configuration, you may need to click: Start > Settings > Control Panel)

  3. Open: Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP ) or Programs and Features (Windows 7) 

  4. Locate your version of Java in the programs list and then click Remove (Windows XP) or right-click on Java and choose Uninstall (Windows 7)

  5. Reboot your computer before resintalling Java

Step 2: How to Reinstall Java

  1. Go to http://www.neowin.net/news/java-runtime-environment-7-update-45

  2. Select the version for your computer (32 bit or 64 bit) to start the download

  3. Install the software 

Windows Offline Version

Note: Install the Windows Offline Version if the (a) download does not complete and (2) you receive a message that the file is corrupt.

  1. Go to the Java manual download page at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/error_installshield.xml

  2. Click the link offline installer (located under Solution at the bottom of the page)

  3. Click Agree and Start Free Download

Step 3: How to Enable Java Add-On

The Java plugin must be enabled in your browser in order for your browser to work normally. This is often necessary after re-installing Java. Use the instructions for your browser type. 

Internet Explorer

After installing Java, you may be prompted to turn on the Java add-on when you open Internet Explorer, click Enable.

You can lso manually enable Java by:

  1. Going to the Tools MenuManage Add-on’s

  2. Select Java from the list

  3. Click Enable (at the bottom right)

  4. Click Allow if you see the the Java add-on prompt: "This webpage wants to run the following add-on: Java"

Firefox

After installing Java, you may be prompted to turn on the Java add-on when you open Firefox, click Enable. You can manually enable Java by:

  1. Going to the Tools Menu or Firefox Button

  2. Select Add-ons

  3. Click the Plugins tab (on the left or the top, depending on which version of Firefox)

  4. Select Java

  5. Click Enable

Chrome

Java is already enabled by default. If you need to enable Java:

  1. Click the Tools Menu (at the top right; it will look like a wrench or a 3-bar icon)

  2. Select Settings

  3. Click Show advanced settings…

  4. Click Content settings…

  5. Select Allow all sites to run JavaScript

  6. Click OK
