ExamGuard (Exam Guard) - General Information

ExamGuard is a “browser within a browser” that essentially “freezes” your computer while you are taking the exam. While in your exam you will notice the following changes in functionality:

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized

  • Assessments cannot be exited until submitted by users for grading

  • Task switching or access to other applications is prevented

  • Printing functions are disabled

  • Print Screen and capturing functions are disabled

  • Copying and pasting anything to and from an assessment is prohibited

  • Right-click menu options are disabled

  • Browser menu and toolbar options are disabled

  • Function keys are disabled

  • Source code for the HTML page cannot be viewed

  • Screen capture, messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machine, and network monitoring applications are blocked from running

ExamGuard is a Plug-in that a student must download to their computer (Mac or PC). Students can access the plug-in from any exam where ExamGuard has been activated. The plug-in download speed will depend on the type of Internet connection the student is using. Overall the process is fairly quick.

NOTE FOR STUDENTS: At the beginning of the process you will want to OPEN the file. This will activate the installation process. Clicking "Save" will not activate the installation process. After the plug-in has been installed you will need to close your browser and log back into your course to take your exam with ExamGuard.

ExamGuard also prohibits students from unauthorized access and sharing of information on their computer when reviewing the results of their exam in the eCollege Gradebook. You will also need ExamGuard to access the exam when reviewing your results in the eCollege Gradebook.

The plug-in will remain on the user’s computer until they remove it. The only time the user will need to download the plug-in again is if the system informs them that a newer version of ExamGuard is available or they download a new or updated browser.
