What is a Spelling Box? The Spelling Box is a tool to help your student learn Heart Words and other words he or she may find difficult. To create your Spelling Box, write Heart Words and other words on index cards and place them in an index card-filing box with alphabetical dividers. When your student demonstrates that he or she can spell these words correctly in three consecutive lessons, remove the card from the box. In upper grades, the spelling box is divided into three sections: Current Unit, Previous Units, and Retired Words. When your student demonstrates they can spell the words correctly three times in a row, move the card to the Retired Words section. Note: It’s important for your student to spell the word correctly over time to demonstrate that he or she has really learned it, not just momentarily memorized it.
